Description   Wild Country VARIABLE CONTROLLER & SYNERGY SG locking carabiner.   Features Originally designed primarily for Trad climbing the VC's ability to deal with thin ropes well whether belaying or abseiling made it a firm favourite and a best seller round the world. It�s adaptability and multi-function design received great reviews when it was first marketed and has meant that it has earned it�s place in the Wild Country range even after all this time. The Variable Controller was one of the first devices to move belay plates onto another level. Its wedge shaped design, which gave the VC its name, was able to be used in two performance modes to give more stopping power or less friction depending on circumstance. This combined the best attributes of �flat� plates with the best of the �deep� plates meaning that when belaying rope could be fed quickly, but when abseiling more friction could be applied. With the introduction of the VC Pro it�s place as our premier device was overtaken so the VC has been adapted for 2006 to make its function overlap with the VC Pro and to complement it more. To do this we have slightly widened out the slots to give extra performance on single ropes, making the VC better than it was for indoor walls and single pitch as well as trad climbing. This means that the VC is most suited for ropes from 9mm to 11mm rather than the more modern super skinny trad ropes where the new VC Pro pulls rank. The VC is better value in 2006 as well and so is a great intermediate choice for climbers maybe not heading for the most extreme challenges. Still light and in a stylish range of colours the VC remains a solid and reliable tool in any climbers armoury. Synergy 12mm Screw A classic shape a classic biner and a best seller. The Synergy screwgate fits the old adage 'if it ain't bust don't fix it' perfectly. In the Wild Country range for a number of years now the Synergy is an ultra-reliable mid size HMS that comes with two choices of gates - a standard screw and a twistlock. Made from 12mm round bar stock means that the Synergy is a true HMS, and this means that this unit is highly recommended for all belaying jobs as the round bar helps the rope run more smoothly. The round bar also means it has the ability to be used with a Italian hitch to double as a belay or abseil device in its own right � useful if you drop your belay device. The Synergy is so good that it is the biner we supply in all our sets of belay devices and is a robust choice for most situations. Screw Vs Twist � There is always a debate here and the general rule is probably that a screwgate is safer because it can be locked peoperly. The twist lock is quick and easy to use though and is perfect if you're opening and closing the biner a lot, say at a climbing wall. However, whichever gate you choose it is important to note that both gates use 7075 alloy which is the same as the biner body and is super strong. This means unlike many other brands the gate when closed should make the same strength if pushed inwards as pulled outwards. This is not a requirement for the CE test but it is something that we have insisted on as there have been a number of notable failures of gates when pushed in, especially in abseiling situations using Figure 8s. Finally, like all the Wild Country biners, the thimble on the gate always stops short of the nose making sure it cannot be over-tightened.
